Hair Loss Treatments
While many people may experience some level of hair loss in their lives, it never affects two people in the same way. As each of us is unique, the quality and quantity of our hair differ from person to person; along with what support each individual requires.
Here at FUE Clinics, our experts offer a wide range of treatments to provide solutions to a number of hair loss issues.
What is hair transplant treatment?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure where healthy hair follicles are extracted from one part of the body to an area experiencing thinning or baldness. When performed by an experienced surgeon, like those at FUE Clinics, it produces natural, long-lasting results, helping to boost your confidence.
The hair transplant procedure can restore hair on various parts of the body, from the crown and hairline to the eyebrows and beard.
The hair transplant surgery process
1.Consultation
The hair transplant process begins with a complimentary consultation to assess your hair loss. Our skilled surgeons at FUE Clinics will provide personalised guidance and determine whether you're the right candidate for a hair transplant by considering factors including:
- The extent of your hair loss
- Your aesthetic goals
- The availability of healthy donor hair
- How long you've been experiencing hair loss
- Your hair's density, thickness, and texture
2.Procedure
Knowing what to expect on the day of your hair transplant can help ease any worries or anxiety.
While the procedure can vary from patient to patient, based on individual needs, it generally follows these steps:
- Anaesthesia – You'll receive local or general anaesthesia for comfort during surgery.
- Extraction – We carefully extract healthy hair follicles using the FUE or FUT method. For FUT, the area where the donor strip was taken is closed using sutures or stitches.
- Graft sorting – Extracted grafts are categorised by thickness and size to match the thinning area's shape and density.
- Implantation – Each healthy follicle is meticulously placed in the recipient area to achieve a natural result.
The entire procedure takes approximately 3 to 8 hours, though the exact duration may vary depending on your surgical plan. You may also need more than one procedure if you have significant hair loss or if you want further improvements in the future.
It's important to keep in mind that the final results won't be evident until your scalp has fully healed and any swelling has subsided.
Hair transplant recovery and aftercare
The success of your hair transplant heavily depends on the quality of your healing. That's why it's so important to avoid certain activities while your hair follicles are vulnerable and healing.
Don't:
- Wash your hair for the first five days – This prevents any potential irritation from shampoo and allows the newly transplanted hair follicles to heal without disturbance.
- Do strenuous exercise for at least 14 days – Intense exercise can increase your blood pressure, which may lead to bleeding at the transplant site. Taking it easy during this time helps ensure a smooth healing process.
- Wear a hat for at least one week – Although it might be tempting to wear a hat to conceal scabs, doing so can create friction and tightness. This can potentially disrupt the healing process or even cause infection.
Do:
- Keep your head elevated for the first two weeks – Keeping your head elevated with pillows while sleeping can avoid any pressure on the scalp while it's healing.
- Follow your surgeon's guidance – Your surgeon will provide pain relief for the first few days and comprehensive aftercare instructions following surgery. Sticking to this guidance ensures a smooth recovery.
The benefits of a hair transplant
There are many pros of getting a hair transplant, including:
- Natural-looking results – Hair transplants provide natural-looking results by transplanting your own donor hair into thinning or balding areas. This blends seamlessly with your existing hair.
- Permanent solution – Hair transplants offer a permanent solution to hair loss, reducing the need for ongoing treatments or products.
- Boosted self-esteem – Having a fuller head of hair can substantially impact your confidence levels, allowing you to feel more at ease in both social and professional situations.
- Low maintenance – Transplanted hair requires minimal maintenance and can be treated just like your natural hair. This means a hassle-free and convenient daily routine.
- Long-term cost savings – Although the initial cost may be higher than other treatments, hair restoration surgery can save you money in the long run by eliminating the need for ongoing hair loss products.

What conditions does a hair transplant treat?
Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss)
Hair restoration surgery is highly effective for people with female or male pattern baldness.
However, hair loss must be stabilised so the surgeon can see the pattern of your hair loss, reducing the risk of needing more procedures in the future. For men, this is usually when you're past stage three of the Norwood Scale.
Scarring alopecia
Although it may be more complicated, a hair transplant can offer a viable solution in some instances. This depends on factors like the type of scarring alopecia, where the scar is, and the availability of healthy donor hair.
While it may not fully reverse scarring alopecia, it can significantly improve hair density and appearance in the affected areas.
Hair loss from injury or burns
Hair transplants can help restore hair growth in areas affected by injuries, including burns. The possibility of success depends on factors like the injury's extent and how much of the scalp is affected.
Unfortunately, people with alopecia areata are typically not good candidates for hair transplants. Alopecia areata is linked to autoimmune issues, which means that the immune system could target the newly transplanted hair follicles and might cause them to fall out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hair restoration surgery may lead to some mild side effects, including temporary discomfort or pain at the transplant site.
Swelling and minor bleeding are also common in the days following the procedure. However, these side effects are typically short-lived and can be managed with prescribed medications and your surgeon's recommended care instructions.
Yes, hair transplants are suitable for both men and women. To learn more, read our complete guide to hair transplants for women.
Hair for a transplant is typically sourced from the back or sides of your scalp, as these areas are usually more resistant to hair loss.
Body hair may sometimes be used as donor hair if scalp donor areas are insufficient, but this is less common.
Being well-prepared contributes to a smoother hair restoration experience. You can do a few things before the day of surgery, like arranging transportation, getting time off work to recover and wearing comfortable clothing.
After your consultation, your surgeon will provide specific guidance, like when to stop eating, drinking alcohol and cutting your hair.
